Souvenir tile of the Plaza de España in Seville, reproduced on glazed ceramic. The Plaza's tiled benches are one of Seville's emblems and a speciality of Sevillian ceramics ever since the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition.

The Álava bench depicts the handing over of the territory to Alfonso XI of Castile in 1332. The ceremony takes place outdoors beneath the canopy of a tree, before a crowd of noblemen, capturing the weight of the oath as a founding act of rights.

The Albacete panel shows the Battle of Almansa of 25 April 1707, one of the decisive clashes of the War of the Spanish Succession. The cavalry in the foreground and the infantry lines deployed behind give the composition an almost cinematic sweep.

The Alicante bench reaches far further back than most: it shows Hamilcar Barca founding Akra Leuka, the Carthaginian settlement from which Alicante grew. Soldiers, captives and ships anchored in the bay make up a Mediterranean scene of clear light.
ALMERÍA - PLAZA DE ESPAÑA
The Almería panel shows the conquest of the city by the Catholic Monarchs in 1489, before its golden walls. The Christian retinue on horseback and the handing over of the keys are framed by a Mudéjar arcade of deep blue.
BADAJOZ PLAZA DE ESPAÑA
The Badajoz bench depicts the conquest of the city by Alfonso IX of León in 1230. The troops advance towards the gate in the walls as the townspeople come out to meet them, in a composition flanked by two large allegorical figures.
BALEARES PLAZA DE ESPAÑA
The Balearics panel records the oath of the kingdom's privileges and charters by King James II of Majorca. The monarch is enthroned among angels and courtiers, in a scene of great chromatic richness and an almost devotional air.
BARCELONA PLAZA DE ESPAÑA
The Barcelona bench shows the Catholic Monarchs receiving Christopher Columbus on his return from the first voyage, in 1493. Beneath the royal canopy pass the gifts brought back from the Indies, in one of the most narrative scenes of the whole square.
BURGOS PLAZA DE ESPAÑA
The Burgos panel records the Oath of Santa Gadea: El Cid administering the oath to Alfonso VI in 1072. The church interior, with its reddish gloom and central stairway, turns the episode into a confrontation of extraordinary tension.
CÁCERES PLAZA DE ESPAÑA
The Cáceres bench shows the swearing of the town charters by the Catholic Monarchs. Knights, ladies and clergy gather before the city walls beneath a blue Gothic tracery of great delicacy, one of the finest in the entire square.
CÁDIZ PLAZA DE ESPAÑA
The Cádiz panel shows the promulgation of the Constitution of 1812, known as «La Pepa». The scene, crowded with flags and an enthusiastic public, is flanked by two Solomonic columns and by the city's coat of arms.
CANARIAS PLAZA DE ESPAÑA
The Canary Islands bench shows Christopher Columbus with his ships at Las Palmas in 1492, during the Canarian stopover on the way to the Indies. The volcano behind, the turquoise water and the rowing boat give this panel an unmistakably Atlantic character.
CASTELLÓN PLAZA DE ESPAÑA
The Castellón panel records the meeting of Pope Luna with Ferdinand I of Aragon and Saint Vincent Ferrer in 1414, during the Western Schism. The scene, set beneath a stone arcade, is framed by a cobalt blue of great luminosity.
